In C (1964) by the American composer Terry Riley is one of those rare contemporary music compositions that can be played by large heterogeneous groups without losing its artistic quality. The piece’s direct experience is immense and the discharge at the end of the concert is intense for both musicians and audience. In C consists of 53 short musical motives. Every motive can be started in chronological order by a (group of ) instrument(s) at any time. Also, every motive can be repeated several times, or just skipped. Musicians can not be more than three motives away from each other, so they have to listen closely to the other musicians. One beat is sounding to keep everyone in tempo.
Different versions of this project are possible.
Urban In C minimal music in an urban context. In this version In C is an interactive participation program with the city as roadmap and the musicians as its discoverers. The beat is heard all over the city while the musicians are moving through the city. This dynamic performance results in an energetic concert with an audience that is free to walk its own way.
In C App ChampdAction and Jazzperiments developed the In C App: with this free application everyone can log in to an In C experience 24h a day. You can play with persons worldwide, choosing your own instrument. www.incapp.net
In C conservatory Because In C can be played by a heterogeneous group, it is a perfect composition to play with music students. This way, they discover minimal music in an active way and the whole conservatory – from singers to percussion to recorders – can participate. Musicians of ChampdAction act as mentors per instrument group and learn the students who to perform In C.
